The Foundation’s musical activities generally takes place at its premises at Number 30 Via Augusto Righi, in a large salon which holds up to fifty people. The size of the room leads to “select” gatherings: more like appointments with friends than real concerts. In the centre is a blonde Steinway grand piano born in 1860…, a lady of a certain age, but very well preserved, who is happy to perform and sometimes graciously agrees to accompany a voice, a cello, a flute or even a harpsichord, but hardly ever remains silent. The promotion of young Italian artists has always been a distinguishing feature of the Foundation, but this is not its main objective. Every meeting challenges the routine of some “official” concerts, which are either dispersive, with pieces which are too diverse, or else offer what is expected and has been heard many times before. Each meeting at the Foundation is the result of a “labour” by the small team involved in the development of a theme. These usually originate from an aspect of the immense Lisztian repertoire and then expand in geographical and temporal directions to other compositions and other musicians who can enhance the chosen theme. There have been themes based on musical forms: the “Sonata”, the “Rhapsody”, the “Waltz” whilst others referred to the emotive content of the evening: “Religious Music”, the “Fantasy”, “Dedications”, “Music and the Unconscious”. There has been no lack of themes regarding nature: “Mountain Landscapes”, “Water”, “The Storm”… Often, before listening to the music, there is a brief, spoken introduction, not in the form of a lecture, but as a way of launching the programmed event. Sometimes it is the musicians themselves who act as “hosts” and introduce the music, at others it is people able to “speak well”. At the end there is always an opportunity to comment, to compliment the artists and to exchange opinions whilst holding a glass and a titbit. |
