Franz Liszt

La lugubre gondola

per pianoforte

[First edition of the Venice manuscripts]

The only version of La lugubre gondola published during Liszt’s lifetime is that issued by Fritzsch in 1885, known since 1927 as the second version (La lugubre gondola II), because in that year Breitkopf & Härtel published another work with the same title, erroneously calling it the first version. Other versions available till now are: A version for violin or cello and piano published for the first time in 1975 by Editio Musica Budapest and then by The Hardie Press in 1992; a version for pianoforte in 6/8, the so-called La lugubre gondola I. In August 1998, at the Benedetto Marcello Conservatorium in Venice, Rossana Dalmonte found two autograph manuscripts of La lugubre gondola which permits to establish with reasonable precision a new chronology of the seven versions. The Venice manuscripts are published here for the first time.
